Mary Jane Seacole (1805-1881) Was A Jamaican Nurse And A Heroine Of The Crimean War. When She Was Refused A Post As A Nurse During The Crimean War, Seacole Went On Her Own Initiative And In 1856 Established A Medical Clinic At Her Own Expense In Order To Provide "A Mess-Table And Comfortable Quarters For Sick And Convalescent Officers." Like Florence Nightingale, She Is Remembered A Champion For Nurses.
