Ewe

Twin Figures. The twin figures of the Yoruba have already been excellently researched and are highly valued by collectors. Those of their western neighbours, the Ewe, who live in Ghana, Togo and Benin, however, are almost unknown. The small-format figures usually carved out of light wood are made for deceased twins. The mother bathes feeds and dresses them like living children. Many of the Ewe carvers are autodidacts from a rural background, uninfluenced by any workshops that set a style. The range of figure types is huge, they are often highly original, expressive and autonomous. Photography by Jorg Schanze.
