We Hope To Get Word Tomorrow

The Garvin Family Letters, 1914-1916. This fascinating collection traces the exhanges between a young subaltern at the front, Gerard 'Ged' Garvin, and his mother and father (Editor of the Observer). Correspondence was eagerly awaited by all. Ged savoured his letters from home; equally, his parents were always fearful that each letter they received would be the last. JL Garvin wrote to his son on 21st July, 1916, '...we hope to get word tomorrow'. Ged was killed the very next day. He was just twenty years old. This correspondence combines three distinct narratives: the view of the subaltern at the front, The Observer office, and the view from home.
